Peter roku 1966 potkal svého dlouholetého spolulezce Reinholda Messnera. V roce 1974 společně jako první lidé vystoupili severní stěnou Eigeru za méně než 10 hodin, čímž dobu výstupu zkrátili na polovinu. O rok později vystoupili poprvé v historii na osmitisícovku alpským stylem, tedy bez použití fixních lan, výškových táborů a bez pomoci nosičů. A roku 1978 zdolali opět s Messnerem jako první lidé vrchol nejvyšší hory světa Mount Everest bez použití umělého kyslíku. Celý život byl také instruktorem lyžování ve své škole v rodném městě Mayrhofen.

A year later, for the first time in history, they climbed the 8,000-meter Alpine style, ie without the use of fixed ropes, altitude camps and without the help of porters. And in 1978, Messner and I were the first people to conquer the summit of the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest, without the use of artificial oxygen. All his life he was also a skiing instructor at his school in his hometown of Mayrhofen.
